Do You Lack the Energy to Propel Your Business?
The real problem may be right in front of you.
Yes! I hope you are in great shape. Welcome to this new edition. If you have just discovered me, I am Yann Gabioud, Life Designer, Expert in deliberate practice. A coach, identity surgeon, passionate about interior performance. I have coached hundreds of entrepreneurs to break their mental ceilings. Not with slogans. With confrontations. Awareness. Discipline.
I told you about one of my 5 values : Entrepreneurship Start From Inside last week. Which means the process of entrepreneurship starts inside you.
But there is also the Self Mastery Training. It is an approach to personal development that aims to help individuals take control of their lives and reach their full potential. This approach focuses on improving the mental, emotional, and behavioral skills of individuals, to help them become more accomplished, happier, and more fulfilled.
So, today, we are going to delve into a subject which, I feel, speaks directly to you. A fundamental pillar for any entrepreneur who aspires not only to succeed, but to achieve fulfillment through his business. We are going to talk about blossoming.
I'm going to show you that fulfillment is not a peripheral option, a "nice-to-have" that you will offer yourself once your business has taken off. It is a fundamental strategic lever for your success. It is the internal engine that fuels your ability to demonstrate Grit in the face of challenges, maintain an inspiring Vision and generate Exceptional performance over time. Without it, you risk burning out long before reaching your ambitions.
Besides, this is not just a personal conviction; it is a major field of study of positive psychology. Pioneers like Martin Seligman and researchers like Shawn Achor have demonstrated, with supporting studies, that individuals who cultivate a high level of fulfillment are not simply “happier”. They are also objectively more productive, more creative, more resilient in the face of adversity and even in better physical health. This means that your fulfillment is not a luxury to treat yourself to after success, but an active ingredient to achieve this lasting success.
Why can a lack of fulfillment make you stagnate?
We are in a society which excessively values working non-stop, to get up at 5 a.m., to never complain, to always “push further”, as if burning out was a badge of honor. The problem ? It creates a culture where hard work becomes normalized, discipline Spartan, constant sacrifice. And yes, it takes work and commitment. But confusing commitment with self-destruction can cost you more than you think.
Your business is a reflection of who you are. If inside there is chaos, frustration, lack of alignment, it will show on the outside. Maybe not right away. Maybe you'll last a while, with just the strength of your wrist. But sooner or later, the cracks appear.
Contaminated Decisions and Creativity: When you are not fulfilled, when you feel stressed, anxious, or when you have this diffuse feeling of "not being in your place", how do you want to make clear and bold strategic decisions? Your reptilian brain takes over. You will opt for security (even if it leads you to stagnation), you will avoid risk (even if it brings opportunities), you will react instead of anticipating. When you're mentally exhausted, your creativity takes a back seat.
Your brain focuses on survival, not innovation.
Neuroscience offers us precise insight into this phenomenon. A state of chronic stress or a feeling of prolonged unhappiness – often companions of a lack of professional fulfillment – directly impacts the functioning of our prefrontal cortex. It is this region of the brain that is the seat of our higher executive functions: rational decision-making, long-term planning, complex problem solving and creative thinking. When the prefrontal cortex is overwhelmed by stress hormones (like cortisol), its capabilities are literally diminished. Your decisions may become more reactive and less strategic, and your ability to generate new ideas is hampered. It's not a question of will or intelligence, but of biology: your brain is then optimized for short-term survival, not for exploration and innovation.
Let's say you need to choose a new direction for your offering. If you are exhausted, stressed by the social pressure to "succeed like everyone else", you will perhaps copy what your neighbor is doing, even if it doesn't look like you, just to "ensure".
A fulfilled, aligned entrepreneur, he will draw on his guts, on his unique vision, and propose an offer/service that has good looks, that makes him vibrate, and which, consequently, will attract the right customers. A lack of fulfillment is like putting on distorting glasses: you see the opportunities blurred and the threats much more obvious.
Free Falling Energy and the Spiral of Exhaustion: Fulfillment is a powerful generator of energy. When you do actions that are meaningful TO YOU, when you feel aligned with your values, when you use your natural talents, it recharges you. Conversely, when you spend your days doing actions that irritate you, that go against who you are, or that make you feel like you're betraying yourself, it drains you. And not just a little. You find yourself "forcing", pulling on the rope, until it breaks. Loss of motivation, cynicism... words you may know too well.
This is the direct consequence of prolonged misalignment. Neglecting your development means accepting to ride with your tank almost permanently dry. You won't go far, and the journey will be difficult.
Imposter Syndrome: When you are not fulfilled, when you are not firmly anchored in your value and in the recognition of your own needs and aspirations, imposter syndrome finds a magnificent playground. You doubt your skills, your legitimacy, your ability to succeed. For what ? Because part of you KNOWS that you are not fully yourself in what you do.
Fulfillment nurtures authentic self-confidence. Not arrogance, but this quiet certainty that you belong, that you bring unique value, because what you offer is an extension of who you are.
So it’s not a matter of “feeling good” for its own sake. It's a question of strategic performance. A fulfilled entrepreneur is a more resilient, more creative, more magnetic, and, ultimately, more successful entrepreneur.
Fulfillment: Deciphering a Vital Need for Your Entrepreneurial Brain
Why does this concept of fulfillment, sometimes considered a little "soft", have such a concrete and powerful impact on your performance as an entrepreneur? The answer lies in the very mechanics of our brain and our deep motivations.
Fulfillment isn’t just about feeling “good” from time to time. It is a state of deep alignment where your actions are in line with your values, your strengths and your most authentic aspirations. It's the feeling of progressing towards a goal that is meaningful to YOU, of using your talents and of feeling fully alive and engaged in what you do.
Psychologically, fulfillment is closely linked to the satisfaction of our basic needs.
Abraham Maslow, with his famous pyramid of needs, already placed “self-actualization” at the top. It's this need to become the best version of yourself, to exploit your potential to the maximum. When this need is met, energy, creativity and resilience follow. When he is frustrated, the whole building falters.
Think of a top athlete. He doesn't just perform through rigorous physical training. He performs because he is driven by a passion, a vision, a burning desire to surpass himself. His mind is forged by this quest for achievement.
Your business is your playground, your challenge, your means of expression. If this terrain does not allow you to accomplish yourself, you will not be able to perform there sustainably.
What science tells us:
A fascinating study conducted by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, founders of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), highlights three universal and innate psychological needs that are crucial for well-being and intrinsic motivation (the one that comes from within, the most powerful):
The need for Autonomy: It is the need to feel that we are in control of our own life, that our choices and our actions are our own, that we are the main actor in our journey. For an entrepreneur, this is the very essence of the freedom sought.
The need for skills: It is the need to feel effective in what we do, to master our environment, to take on challenges and to see the impact of our actions. It’s the satisfaction of “doing your job well” and seeing the results.
The need for Social Connection (or Belonging): It is the need to feel connected to others, to have authentic relationships, to contribute to something greater than oneself. Even for a solopreneur, this need for connection and recognition is fundamental.
When these three needs are met, self-determination theory (and numerous studies have since confirmed it) shows that individuals are not only more fulfilled and happy, but also more engaged, more creative, more perseverant and more successful. They develop “autonomous” motivation, that is to say they act out of interest, pleasure or because the activity is in accordance with their deep values.
What does this have to do with your stagnant business? If your current activity does not sufficiently nourish one or more of these fundamental needs (lack of real autonomy despite your status, feeling of incompetence in the face of challenges, isolation, etc.), your internal engine stifles. Your fulfillment declines, and with it, your ability to propel your business. You can have the best strategy in the world, if these needs are not met, you will be rowing against the tide.
Understanding this mechanism means realizing that aiming for fulfillment is not a selfish whim. It's creating the optimal conditions for your entrepreneurial brain to operate at full capacity. It's giving you the means to unleash your full power.
